Signpost or Discourse structure

Signpost or Discourse Structure Think of it like a roadmap for your writing or speech before the reader or listener: Speakers and writers use special techniques (called signposts) to guide their audience through their argument or message. These signposts help connect what is being said now to what was said before and what's coming next. It's like creating a clear path for the reader or listener to understand. "Discourse structure" refers to the overall organization of a text, like how a poem, newspaper article, or speech is put together to convey the message. It's just like a big picture of how language is used to communicate effectively. Just like a roadmap helps you navigate/go through a journey, these signposts and structures help your audience follow his argument or message.

How to write a good paragraph | a well structured paragarph

How is a paragraph structured?

A good paragraph begins with a topic sentence that briefly explains what the paragraph is going to be about. Next come a few sentences for development and support, elaborating on the topic with more detail. The paragraph ends with a conclusion sentence that summarizes the topic or presents one final piece of support to conclude.

What are the keys to a strong paragraph?

A strong paragraph explores a single topic with details following logically.  A good paragraph often uses transitions to connect otherwise disjointed sentences, helping every piece of information to work together
Five important steps to write a good paragraph:

  • Make the first sentence of your topic sentence.
  • Provide sufficient support via the middle sentences.
  • Make your last sentence a conclusion or transition.
  • Know when to start a new linking paragraph.
  • Use necessary transition words.

An example of a well-structured paragraph:

Many unavoidable incidents happen every day, but a few of them keep afresh in the attic of your memory throughout your life just because of their healing effects. They become an asset in your life perpetually. A few days ago when I was on my way home from my office, I happened to see a mother in her thirties, carrying a few suitcases of luggage in the company of her four kids, who was walking along the footpath. She stopped, looked back and again started walking. She stopped and again started walking. It looked as if she was waiting for someone to join her. It dawned on me when her elder kid invariably looked back. In the meanwhile, a taxi driver tried to get them in his taxi, but no vail. My curiosity was aroused when a man of forties finally arrived and wrapped himself with his three angelic kids including two boys and a girl. The youngest one was in the lap of its mother. The youth who had just arrived was of my acquaintance. Thus the whole poignant sight made me understand the worry of the affected family because he had already briefed me on his recent worries. (A few days ago the couple had had some fights on some issues of financial matters. The youth wanted to provide the kids fine clothes and good education, but he could not do well. So, he left the house to earn some means.) These innocent kids could not realize the drudgery of the situation and efforts to get livelihood that separated the couple but they only know their love for their father.
As the gridlock of traffic was over, I moved ahead but this everlasting scene gave me a great lesson in life within a short span of time: "Love, emotions, and sacrifices are the great assets for a happy and successful life. The beauty of life lies in the existence of permanence love and sacrifice."  Life must go on and on.
